It is one year after the death of General Prozoroff.  Olga, his eldest daughter, is a high school teacher, middle daughter Masha is unhappily married to a teacher in the same school, and youngest daughter Irina and brother Andrei dream of moving back to Moscow.

Vershinin, the new army commander, moves to town. He, Solyony and Baron Tuzenbach compete for the sisters’ affections. Meanwhile, Andrei marries Natasha, a hometown girl, who has plans to take over the house.
